how do you go about doing something like this?
http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003…
or
http://www.circuitcity.com/flash…
is this just 3dmax taken into another program? thanks for any help you can give me.

CNN is using the Cult 3D plugin. There are a few others out there.
It's all real time rendering, but I believe the technologies differ. Some use Java programming, etc.
I would guess that you use optimized models (like for graming) to start with.
There is also a program that can render Max models in realtime, allowing you to navigate through like a game. Only problem, that program costs several thousands of dollars on top of Max.

i can't view either of those sites...i have no cult-plug nor do they have one for my browser... the other site gave me some session time out....
so i did not see shit.
and i don't watch cnn anymore anyway..since they talk crap beyond believe.
as today the sukers spoke about a significant amount of troops entering the center of Baghdad as BBC World (amongst nmany other news broadcasters i have checked) couldn't find ONE single American soldier ANYwhere throughout most of the city...they all checked each others sightings of the day...and noone saw anything that could proof CNN's 'breaking news'.
They even got this award at the annual 'Roosevelt Four Freedoms Awards', which is bi-annualy organized in my town of birth (Middelburg, NL, since Roosevelts roots lay here) and the other year it's held in NYC.
People such as Havel and the Dalai Lama received such awards... but please CNN, box it and send it back to us...as you don't deserve it.

I know there was a java applet that would use 3D files from Max and display them on a webpage... i'm looking for this sucker for quite a while but haven't had any luck... :-(

unfittoprint,
if you find it let me know. i found that swift 3d has a max plug-in which im going to try and play with.

in response to mbr's point about a plugin for real-time gaming plug-in for Max, I think you are talking about Havok?!? It's about $70,000 but most likely wasn't used to make anything like the cnn models. You can, however, use Havok to export real-time 3D to shockwave.

Nope, not Havok, it's called RTRE from http://www.cubicspace.com and goes for $8k. It's gotten superb reviews and will surely be a big part of my industry (arch. viz, mostly) sometime in the future (when it gets to be more like $800!).
There are bunch of real time renderers for online viz stuff, if anyone really cares I can dig the list up (it was in 3D World months ago). They all offer interactivity that would take effort to duplicate with Swift and Flash (and probably take longer to download). The problem is that most people don't want to be hassled with another download, esp. one they don't know anything about. There is at least one that use Java and doesn't require a plugin.
You can use Plasma for online stuff, much more sophisticated than Swift.

only 8k? ill order that tomorrow :)
