how many people here have their site hosted by their own servers?
would you recommend this to a small site developer?

Been thinking about it, I think the main issue is your bandwidth. Broadband in the UK isn't all that broad, so I may have to start buying DVD's again if i'm going to host from my lounge. But if you've got the bandwidth, go for it.

you have to check with your isp though cuz some don't allow you to have personal servers on their lines unless you upgrade to the business line.

i would totally recommend it, if nothing else its great for experimenting with, and since you can set yourself up with just your cable connection (assuming you have one), its free besides the blood sweat and tears you invest setting it up.
It will be noticebaly slower than going with a professional hosting company in most cases though.

how much bandwitch does a cable connection usually allow, assuming that the isp allows it

"bandwitch", haha i said bandwitch, can you believe that?

It really does depend on your ISP. Throughput-wise, you can have anything up to 2mbps if you'll pay for it. Data volume-wise, it depends.
