Heres the effect I need to create---
Imagine you have a big piece of latex that has an image on it. Take your face and press it against it so that it appears that the face is trying to push itself through the image. This is the effect that I need to make, with a specific image I created.
Now, Im shit at 3d programs. I try to stay away from them because I tend to want to stick my fist through the monitor. If anyone can give me tips on creating this sort of effect, I will be forever grateful.

I'd first look throug some tutorials on displacement maps, but not sure if that will give enough of a look. Other than that, start going through face tutorials.
I can't imagine it will be easy not being familiar at all with 3D, though.

Yes you can do it with a displacement map. Just search google for a displacement map of a human face.
You can also melt the face and use your image as an imagemap.
