Does anyone recommend the following:
I have seen a few big sites that use a single image as there navigation and have several 'hotspot slices' as links on this 1 image. As opposed to about a dozen seperate images for each nav button.I'd prefer to do the '1 image' method but does anyone discourage or know of any possible compatibility problems with this method??
cheers

if you dont have any rollovers or anything interactive, why wouldnt you?
picture a map of the United States and you want each state to be clickable, I would use an image map and cant think of a better idea than using an image map.

are there any browser incompatibility issues with image maps?

doubt it, image maps are as old as dirt... but ya, i think theyre still pretty useful from time to time.

there shouldnt be any compatibility issues at all with image maps, they are about as old school as it comes with html... i have to use them all the time at work unfortunately.
people moved away from using them because of the load time for a large image, splitting up a large image into segments made at least part of the content available without waiting for everthing... but in the age of broadband, the load time for a jpg isnt too much of a concern anymore.
