    hey guys...

currently I am doing contract work with a biotech and life science association... I am redesigning their website...

2 days ago I spent about 8 hours, a full day, on ONE image to be used as a constant through out the site, a header image... it is a digital collage of sorts... and an attempt to combine all the different sectors of the association...

so I show it to my boss... she thinks its too dark etc etc... also she wants to add a fish... like... right in there... an ugly ass fish , like we are talking a little trout... among my biotech/life science collage... oh my god... whats worse... is she picked the one she wants... fuck... it is SO ugly... and hard to implement... shiiit...

I am not gonna go into the other shit I have had to deal with... and the site is due in THREE DAYS... jeeeez...

so here is my question to you guys...

what is the craziest thing a client or boss has ever asked you to do for a website or project that they hired you for?

  • unknown0

How can you spend 8 hours on a header? Wow.

Dont beleive the turtle. Slow and steady will get you fired.

  • subSTANCE0

hahah... yeah tell me about it...

well it was a collage... just trying to find then combine all the right images seamlessly... took me a bit of time!

but I agree... it was time consuming... however if she would have excepted it... i would have been worth it, I think

client: I was thinking about a really really big header saying "Welcome!" and then instantly re-direct to the real site.
me: oh okay, you want a welcome page and then the content?
client: yes, but when you've entered the welcome page it should re-direct right away!
me: err.. well, how long do you want the welcome-page to be visible before the other one appears?
client: zero! it should be really fast.
me: but then you wouldn't see the page if it changes right away?!
client: no, I want this!! Please fix!

well , im only a noob designer , ive only had like 3 contracts till now. and each time it was a nightmare.

    I have tons of examples...
I really hate this , i think the client should be able to give its inputs and optinion to a certain level, BUT not have TOTAL control of whatever we do damn it. Everytime a client ask me for something really gay and ugly , i try to explain to them that its not "cool" but they are very stubborn and in the end they always trow the final " well im the client , and im paying you money to do what I WANT " ...

I think clients sometimes forget that , its our job , to make a web site /design/ for the clients of their company , not for them .
Not to mention the fact that they have absolutely no clue of certain restrictions , like they want something FULL SCREEN , and then they want it to be 800x600 so everyone can see it , but when they look at it on their 1280x1024 its not full screen...
Also , they give you CRAPPY images to put on the site , and when i say crappy , its like , really crappy , and then they ask you to ZOOM it in , but of course that is gonna cause some pixelization , and u tell them , but they dont understand , so you show them , and even tho they SEE it , because of their "pride" they will not admit it and insist on taking the full zoomed ugly pic ...

bottom line , so far i have had alot of shitty clients. I think it shouldnt work that way , i think we should decide what is best . the only choice the client would have would be to decide WHO would make their web site... i mean if they hire me , instead of the other guy , well its because they liked my work .

Im pretty sure big companies like 2advanced or wddg or whatever dont let their client COMPLETELY modifie to their vision whatever work they present to them , they might let them give some inputs , and decide to take these inputs in account or not. but im sure if they let the client decide everything from A to Z , they would make crappy work most of the time.

I really hate it when i client ask me to remove or modifie something i really liked in my designs , i keep all my original designs to put them in my next portfolio , because sometimes after the client bash our work , in the end its pretty ugly. so i make backups.

sorry i talked to much , its just that this annoys me ALOT , i guess ive been really unlucky so far , ... i hope so.

Oh yeah , one client , im providing hosting services for them , so they pay me X$/month. but THEY INSIST , and they WONT UNDERSTAND , that I CANT give them internet access ... i explained to them again and again , and they DONT BELIVE ME......... omg.

Louno... you read my mind, exactly...

clients higher you for a reason... to make them something that will stand out... that will be noticed... that will inform... that will make their presence as a business known...

why do they do that? because they don't know how to do it themselves! yet once we are hired... we become their bitches...

the things I have put up with on my current client... I have 3 days to finish this site... just ONE DAY ago... my boss takes one of her VERY RARE looks at what I am doing (a header to be used through out the site)... and what she is paying me for, at this point she is STILL trying to find me images for the header she wants to use... and says... "I don't like it... it's too dark... and we need more images... I will look for some"... ooooh man... wasn't it hard trying to tip toe around the fact every picture she picked out was crap... in the end... she INSISTED on this UGLY picture of a fucking fish that I have to work into my collage... and trust me... it doesn't work...

it pisses me off so much...

keep in mind THREE DAYS left...

then she tells me that permission has not yet been given to her to use the images I used to create the digital collage!... so she left a message and the girl will get back to her in TWO DAYS!

... theres a bit more... we have a person writing the content for the site... my boss tells me YESTERDAY that she will have to get in touch to write more content for a nice extra few sections she wants!... IN THREE DAYS... oh my god... I am here right now at work, on sat, trying to fit this fucking ugly ass fish into my collage... and trying to change the WHOLE color scheme because it has to be "more colorful"...

all the time keeping in mind this was brought to my attention with THREE DAYS LEFT until it is launched at a huge conference.... oooooh man... RETARDED...

    haaa nice StyleJunky...

maybe if I just put that ugly fish in there... and make it look REAL UGLY... then say "choose"... she MIGHT make the decision to go with the better one... probably not though... she would probably pick the ugly fish version...

  • unknown0

    use a real fish

a stinky rotten wet fishy one

smell up the office with it

  • BonSeff0

sometimes its good to pick your battles. get paid and move on to the next one. if you stress about a banner too long it will wear you down

  • subSTANCE0

    *sigh*

yeah... you are probably right... it KILLS me that I will not like the final product... but I don't have much of a choice I guess...

As time goes on, and work in the field, one of the most important things you'll earn is how to handle your boss/clients. Which isn't to say that you won't have a nightmare boss/client, just that you'll have fewer problems (like your client putting his foot down and reminding you who's paying).

Also, people who hire a contractor with three jobs under their belt are always going to be complete dicks. Get used to it. Do the jobs to get more experience, take their shit and learn.

The really nice clients, the ones who respect your job and are great to work with, rarely hire contractors.

What they're expecting from a contractor is someone who is *cheap*, unprofessional and inexperienced.

    Expect the same from them.

I really like the request for internet access though, that's funny.
