Did anyone else see the "War Gives Us Purpose" speech by Chris Hedges in NYC last night? I was blown away by this guy!!!

I don't see how you could justify that statement 'war gives us purpose' ... sounds pretty fukd, link?
- o0o0
oh..
that's interesting, he wasn't justifying war. There were a lot of good points in there...I notice that too, that sort of 'narcotic' effect of war. I can feel it too, there's a certain excitement. That's what bothers me about many pro-war arguments... they seem like a thin veil over a burning desire to blow shit up. You have to fight the urge to destroy, or at least channel it in a constructive way.
I was talking about that with friend that was in the Army in Bosnia. He said a bunch of guys in his unit were all excited when there were being deployed... but he said none of those dumb-asses were too happy when they got out there and could hear the bombs dropping.

PS2 helps me overcome the need to destroy things...
...played Red Faction last night (Quake type game). Lets you blow up the environment...put holes in walls with a rocket launcher...etc. I played the multiplayer mode with bots set to easy...was a massacre.

"they seem like a thin veil over a burning desire to blow shit up"
i think that's a common misconception. i think you can be pro-war and still regard human life.
many pro-war advocates i know only agree with the reason we are over there (to liberate the iraqi's), but are concerned with our governments approach.

The following are people who get a big "FUCK YOU!" from me:
1.US Troops
2.IRAQI Troops
3.Innocent people who get killed
4.People who worry about this war
5. People who think any gov't. can bring about peace and justice
6.People who think they're gonna make a difference one way or another with their stupid PEACE posters or PRO-WAR posters, marches, etc.

Anyway, the speech was amazing, though he's not the greatest orator. His experiences blow me away...enough to say that this fella knows what he's talking about. Devout Republicans in the room, even, rethought their stances. That's how good he was.
"The first casualty of war is truth."

i agree lyrek, the guy blew me away too, made me wanna read his book straight away, he knows what hes talking about through personal experience. an unbias look at the way humans really are, truly genuine.

There is a striking similarity between the "drug" of war and the fanatcism of religion. And that in itself suggests a scary quandry...
The underlying problem is extrelmely basic: that people are different. The problem we run into as co-existing humans on this planet is that we cannot get along harmoniously. Am I a Jew? Am I a Catholic? Am I a Muslim? The decision to adhere to one of these ideologies are a response to the development of ones self-identity. And we all are aware of the dogmas that religion proposes...
I feel seeing things from multiple sides requries a considerable ammount of personal, inward reflection. A task some are too afraid to tackle. So as a result I think some people turn to religion, warfare, drugs, shopping etc.
Living in harmony, is something alot fear. They would have to get off the lazyboy and learn something new.
