what's "pixel art"? can i read books on the topic?
- Sapphire0
pixel art is the exact opposite of antialiase effects, when you draw with MS Paint you are doing pixel art (unless you painstakinly antialiase it pixel by pixel).
- monkchild0
yeah but who does that? it must take fucking ages to produces images that way.

well, some people don't have a life... like me.. we just sit around all day, and that usually gives us alot of time... a LOT of time to do some silly stuff like ... pixel art.
and besides, it got pretty trendy

yea i know it got unbearable hip but that's why i thought designers would hire 3rd world people to do something as crafy as that and not do it themselves. i mean, if you spend 24 hours a day developing pixel art how much time is there to spend on great ideaS?

thats why now 2advanced is employing a "sweat studios" in cambodia

this stuff was mastered in the early 90's by artists at companies like lucasarts, for example check out the gorgeous shots from secret of monkey island

Keep in mind that these shots are frames from ANIMATIONS of this style - so good...they even got things like light intensity and shading basically perfect
They illustrated this way out of neccessity - limited colors (8-16 bit usually) and limited processors to redraw 'math' driven graphics.

wish I had the patience for pixel art. I have seen some nicely done paintings using that technique. That is a whole other ball game, though.

Or you could try adjusting the levels and contrast of a pic in photoshop then pixelate/mosaic filter, and then change mode to indexed color dropping the pic down to fewer colors.

you can do that in photoshop too
just use size 1 on your pencil tool!
