how do they do that ripple effect on the images?

Looks like it's been done manually by tracing the outline of the image and masking it,

That's not so much work is it? If they were shot against white you could just break up the layer, delete the white and use it as a mask? Or maybe that would not be a v good quality outline...

Inside a movie clip they've told the target clip to duplicate every third frame or so, then set the property of the x+y positions slightly .
Meanwhile they're just fading out a square from 99 to alpha one over the top.

you could do it with one mc in which you have the image at 20% opacity being revealed by a mask. duplicate that movie clip at the same co-ordinates but seperated by a few frames. Bosh.
