a spot color is generally a PMS color, cmyk is a process

it's pretty straight forward. no cmyk files accepted. spot colors only (pantone or other color matching system). the halftone size is incredibly low. newspaper is usually 85lpi.

Spot colors appear on its own plate after sep. It can be pre-mixed from a matching system like Pantone which is the standard. so basically one flat color but you can add tone to it using black plate at diff tint percentages,
Lpi means Lines per inch it is used to measure the # of halftone cells per inch used to color sep or print gryscale, which is know as screen frequency. If you are producing a a haltone image 2x the screen frequency = the resolution you should use.
