Now that I have a router at home and a static IP I want to be able to access my machine using my laptop when I'm away.
At the moment I just have the router IP left as default 192.168.1.1 and my 2 machines are .2 and .3.
What the fuck do I have to do to be able to access my computer or use remote desktop??
I'm on a mac but I guess the principles the same. ?????

I believe that the easiest would be to create a port on your router that points to the IP of your desktop. The Router should have documentation on how to do this.
I'm not sure if this is the most secure way of doing things.... although the would be hackers would have to find the port and then get past the Mac password, which is probably more secure than Windows.

unfortunately the router I have is notorious for its lack of documentation... The remote desktop manual says that I would need to do that and gives the port number I should use, thing is I cant work out exactly where to do this in the router config...

Does your router have a web admin page?
It's called "Port Forwarding" so maybe you can look at thier website and see how it's done.

yeah, the configs in a browser but doesn't have anything called port forwarding - it does have 'add local server' perhaps thats it?
I dont have much of a clue with this as you can tell! oh yeah, and should I really be assigning a new address for the router or does this not really matter?
Any good links to 'understandable' sites/forums?
thanks

Try google groups, they usually have hard to find info.... do a search for your router and what you're trying to do.
What kind of router is it anyway?

nokia IP55
I think some reading is in order
I had a feeling this wasn't going simple

Yah, should have or if you still have time get one of those easy to use routers with the fancy dropdown menus and lots of radio buttons.

This should be close enough to get you going...
Look under the "Advanced" tab for "Local Servers" or something similar.
From here, you want to enable "Local Servers" and then add one of the IP's from your LAN (which ever machine will be the server). Next it should give you some form of option for "Service" - which I am assuming is like http, ftp, telnet, etc...your standard web server ports.
Pick one (or more if you have that option).
You can probably set up multiple "Services" on a single IP just by adding the same IP over and over with a new port or service configured.
I don't know for sure.
The IP55 is very very similar to the WebRamp 600 series from what I've read...and this is how you would config a server on the WR 600i.
I use a Linksys at home one LAN and a 3COM Firewall on the other.

thanks sp, youre right it is basically a rebranded webramp 600i, I've just done what you said to set up apple remote desktop, port 3283 for UDP but I get an error, though I think theres something up with the install there...
I'll have to figure out which 'service' I should access my machine remotely.
thanks, i battle on hehe :)
