how do you guys approach mock ups? i started something for a client and i'd like to give him a few pages to click through. is this too much? do you guys usually charge for mock ups? how do you present them, just a jpeg online? any help for a mock up kinda sunday night?

my practice must be differ from you guys in the US, but usually JPEG's are fine for the first time...

consider them as a potential long term cilents or not...if do work better, if not....hmm...

Basically, my partner and I do three samples a piece and chose the best 3 out of those 6 and present them to client after they've put down agreed upon down payment.

JPEGs are fine. Sometimes if the idea needs to show interactivity I might do a rough in flash to show how it flows. it's also easier to get buy in to use flash that way.

comps - JPGs
clickthrough- html/flashand it should be part of the contract and part of your time spent on the project.

i may be wrong, but if this is a mockup for a deal that's already done and you've got the gig, then it's part of the job.
otherwise, if it's a mockup TO GET the job, then you charge.
no?

The tricky part starts when they want mix up 2 or 3 directions. Take that nav and stick it with that brand message. We usually try to push back on them by explaining that the concepts are very different. We try to get them to pick a concept, not just a design.

hmm it sucks. the times we're in i think if you charge for a mock up some people will not like you much.
here is something i'm working on for a client and why i started this thread let me know what you guys think.

clean design dude - but the nav has left me stuped - is one a sub-nav? You need to clarify the navigation....

I'd say that is a good mockup, especially if you sit by the client when he first sees it, so you can point and explain.

it's mesmo here, just at work.
the nav on the left is sort of a sub nav. this is common in mortgage sites. there is so much info there has to be another place to put things. i hope the guy likes it and we seal the deal.

time spent making mockups is definitely billable. just don't spend days on them :)

yeah...i know. i'd love to bill for it. i think the job is pretty much ours.
