Increment Links

Just working on a simple temporary portfolio site. Each page of work will be numbered 001.html, 002.html etc. As well as an index page, I'll be adding forward and back navigation.
Does anyone know if I can use a simple Javascript to do this? I want the script to take the current page number (e.g. 003.html) and either take one number off (to 002.html) or add one on (to 004.html). It would save me a lot of time editing the links on every page. Anyone know of any links to a tutorial or script? Has any of what I've said make any sense?
Thanks in advance, guys.

Cheers guys. Well, it's Monday morning. Anyone got any ideas?
I think what I'm asking to do is straight forward but I just don't know where to start. Any help or links would be appreciated. Ta.

Thanks but it's not exactly what I had in mind. I only want to use the links to move between different pages (as I want complete control over the layout). If I just knew what to search for I could probably find it on Google. Anyone know? Tried "increment links" but got nothing.
