syncing laptop files

ok, so dad's got a fancy new laptop and a desktop machine. how the hell do I make sure that he can share files between the two without creating duplicates and driving himself batty?
Was thinking about Groove till I found out that they're working with the DOD on Total Information Awareness.... Any other ideas?

what platform? Is he permanently networked between the two , or is the idea to take files with him on laptop, then synch when he gets back?
There's heaps of Synchronizer apps out there... where you just tell it which folders you want to keep synched, and it synchs both ways or one way depending what you want.

Both machines are XP, an external drive would be cool but it would just give him another thing to loose/carry around....

windows has briefcase and offline files. look into those in the windows help files.
