unable to use after effects

  I have a question which i hope somebody could help me out with.
  I currently have a trial version of adobe after effects 5.5 which doesn't work on my system. I can install it without any errors, but when i launch the application it closes instantly.
  Any word on what might be causing this?

  By the way, i'm running win xp
