I'm working on an article about Flash character animation and design for Computer Arts Specials (www.computerarts.co.uk). Please get back to me ASAP on if you're interested in contributing. Details follow:

Background: This issue is about how to create a character (in Illustator/ Photoshop) and animate it in Flash. We will be showing our readers how to create a cartoon animation from start to finish with emphasis on the animation of the main character.

This supporting feature is about animation tips from the experts. We need to know about the best way to design for the Web with regards to animation. Comparisons can be perhaps made with cell animation, or that of 2D arcade games of old. We need to know things such as:

    - What makes good character design?
    - What's the difference between a mediocre character and a great character that will endure and even evolve?
    - Are web characters more 'throw' away than those on film or TV?
    - If so, how do we improve them?
    - What are the basics personality traits that every character needs?
    - What influences you when designing for Web character animation?
    - How do you balance fluidity and download times?
    - Which parts of a character need animating and how do you achieve this?
    - If your style is a little more abstract, how do you ensure the animation works?
    - How do you give characters 'weight' (rather than them looking like they're floating)?

Any more tips you can provide would be excellent--the more, the merrier, as we're looking to pull out around 25, all of which will be quoted. If you can provide images to back-up some of your tips, that would also be excellent.

We would also like to talk about different genres of characters and the killer traits of each, should that be relevant to you, and any really great designs you've done.

We also need images from you, including cool character designs, and also frames of animation (complete loops if you can).

Please send responses back by Friday 14 March at the very latest.
