Brassai was THE photographer on the streets back then. He was friends will all the ex-pats boozing it up in the brothels, etc. Henry Miller and company.

Get a book by Brassai, I love his work. The opium den pics, the bordelos, vintage gay/lesbo bars, thug bars, grafitis. I had to do some research on paris in the 30s and he was my favorite.

If you need public domain photographs then I would try the Library of Congress Catalogs. I always seem to find good old photos in there. Most of them pertain the the US proper but there might be photos from some of the tours during WWI and WWII or links to similar European based LOC type websites.

I got lots of pictures of 1940's Germany, I got to scan those puppies, they are from my Uncle when in southern Deutschland, invading the Nazis. crazy shit!
