I'm not really sure how the story goes. Isn't it an ancient greek symbol of victory? But also, isn't it some design-student from Portland that supposedly designed it for a few bucks? Please clarify. Also, can you think of any visual (signs) that have changed their meaning by being appropriated?

The NIKE logo, the SWOOSH, found on most NIKE shoes and apparal and other products, is a graphic desigh created by Caroline Davidson in 1971. The SWOOSH represents the wing of the Greek Goddess NIKE (pronounced NI-KEY)
Caroline met Phil Knight(the founder of NIKE) while she was teaching an accounting class. She started doing some freelance work for his company. Caroline was asked to design a logo to fit on a side of a shoe. She came up with the SWOOSH. In return Phil Knight gave her $35 bucks. The first shoe with the SWOOSH logo came out in the spring of 1972
