Word up NTers
I'm writing a small magazine article about use of sound on the web, just wondered if any of you have some opions on the matter/points/tips &c...
I'll start: Why do people feel the need to give there sites soundtracks? If I want to listen to Boards of Canada, I'll be playing it in iTunes...

I could give you a lot of info on it actually. How it's used, why it's used, how effectively it's used etc. If you want my two cents. I develop and restore audio all the time for small clients.

well, I think that is a very simple question..
why sound on the web?
multimedia my friend.. you can make just a plain sheet of paper (just like the ones on the newspaper) and put that on the web, or you can create an ambiens, atmosphere, what its ussually called, a multimedia experience.
Acording to your thoughs, you can also go to the movie with your ipod, and read subtitles.. while listening to your own soundtrack. right?
If it already has a sound it should be to take the viewer through a better perception of the message that that movie, website, cd rom, dvd its trying to communicate.

it sets the tone. and why not?
would you watch a movie with the subtitles on and the sound off while you play your own music? (assuming you are sober)
if someone's personal site has music, then i will listen. because they spent time picking that sound/music to go witht he site (we hope). it creates the atmosphere they wanted, and i want to get the experience they want to give me.

Well it was delibrately antogonistic question. Got points miklo. I totally agree that the web should be about more than just replicating paper.
But that's also the point I guess - If a site is a portfolio of graphic design or a company home page then the same section of a song looping in the background doesn't add anything to it - and to some (many) it'll be annoying.
I'm rambling: If the sound an integral part of the experience it's a good thing. If it's just a song over the top of web site it's pointless.
Any other thoughts on sound would be greatly apprreciated...

it's all about your skills, not stock loop shite

audio is just like design.
if you dont put an effort into it, then it shows.
good designers probably put a lot of time into choosing the right music/sounds, bad designers... well, you get the point.
