can anybody tell me how to make a traditional canvas frame, with wedges etc. to help stretch the canvas. and any resources for canvas making, prepping etc.

you're going to make the stretchers? wedges? if you make the stretchers right you shouldn't need wedges.. that's just for those cheap store bought canvases when they start to get loose...
I think the strongest and easiest stretcher to build is a "box frame" ... I can't find anything on the web about how to build them... it's hard to explain... gimme a sec and I'll sketch something for you...
You have access to a tablesaw and/or chopsaw?

let me know if it doesn't make sense. That link poopmonkey gave you shows the right order to staple the canvas in...For prepping I actually use acrylic house paint from the hardware store. They often have paint they mixed wrong and sell for reduced prices. Art store gesso is acrylic also, so it's almost the same stuff.

I still have some blank canvasses I've been meaning to deface for some time.. I think you need a week off just to get into the idea haha
