I love Zurich. For such a small city (250 000?) it sure has some funky design shit going on. The information graphics, signage, HED, club flyers are great... Muller-Brockman came from there didn't he?
And yes weed is legal and they have fabulous cake, chocolate and cheese.
- ********0
a common wee misconception seems to be that weed is legal -
it's not but the Swiss are too polite to complain about you smoking so it is tolerated...Swiss German interestingly enough is frowned upon by NT as we found out this morning....
ah well I reckon I'll soon be known as OnD_MX_II
huere siech!

it's been decriminalised though hasnt it? Last time I was there was New Years 2000-2001 which (I thought) was when it was being decriminalised ... we could buy weed from the video shop downstairs. Maybe they were just friendly.
I liked Zurich too cos they seemed to like anything or anyone "different". My boyfriend is Indian and I am Eurasian and everyone seemed interested in us and where we'd come from, slightly different from other cities I've been to in Europe. Maybe that's just a fickle aspect of Zurich but I like it!

No that's a bit of the irony in the whole situation over there, there are shops that sell almost nothing but ganja but it is still illegal....also everything in Switzerland is governed at Cantonal level so it varies greatly between one canton and the next....
I do believe I know the video shop you mean....just off the Langstrasse (red light millieu)?
In fact in that particular part of town they crack down more and more on all drugs (which in the case of smack, coke and crack is just as well)....
Most young people there are pretty cool and interested in other people's culture and backgrounds etc... although there can be a great deal of racism too....one of my best pals is Swiss/ Senegalese and suffers ignorance and xenophobia (although he is a Swiss national) from time to time.....
anyway glad to know you thought it was cool!

>>they seemed to like anything or anyone
really vespa? The foreign people I know that live there always say how hard it is to communicate with people and break the social circles.
Overall I'd have to say the Swiss are very uptight about certain things. Even folks in Zurich. Still, a great place!
Im Swiss, but live in Toronto. Maybe I should be movin' on up this list. :)

the thing is if you're foreign, or dual national (like me) your friends are very likely to be the same ie not full blooded Swiss....
To be fair to the Swiss this comes from both sides though... I supose you've got more in common with others who are in the same boat...that said I get along with anyone fool enough to listen to me!

That's a good point MX_OnD... The friend that we were staying with (upstairs from that video shop, I'm pretty sure it's the one you are talking about too) is half Libyan, half Swiss.
adriandd, I think it was easier for us cos she is a bit of a social butterfly, she is a DJ and her boyfriend at the time was a pretty big dj in Zurich so maybe it's the same as in London where people only let you into their social circle if you know someone already. They also seemed to think London is really cool so maybe they liked us more cos of that ;) Sounds superficial I know but I've noticed I do it unconsciously too if people are from somewhere I imagine is cool!

Hey vespa, true it does matter on who you hang with. The club scene is obviously more open minded than a cow farmer in Mannenbach. :)
Last time I was there I was hanging with my cousin's exgirlfriend and even though she was 'young and modern' and well traveled, I was kind of surprised by her attitude to some foreigners in her area. Had to expand her mind a bit. :)
Anyways, glad you had a good time there. I need to go for another visit !

the club cultur in Zürich is the best in Switzerland. (rote fabrik, lethargy, trax, ...)
Bern is also good.i'm living in Lausanne and here, the people are snob. And there is no alternative movement. Only big club with star-dj and it's always the same.
But in an other and there's really really good pub !!!
CAPTAIN COOK forever !

adriandd funny you should say about your cousin...my cousin (called Adrian coincidently enough) is a good example of how there are two groups of "young and modern" Swiss...one takes everyone as they are the other isn't racist but don't like "the jugos" or "the albanians" or whatever.....none of them would dare admit to being racist though, cos that's just not politically correct now is it?
sadly my cousin is also now an officer of the law at immigrations in Zürich airport.....

i love it here because it's such a cultural mix... different from other cities in CH. i lived in berne and solothurn and found out that zurich has all i need to live.
and yes, it's big for music! yo all have to visit our city in summer (for hanging out, clubbing and streetparade)
