So I've created this library a long time ago for elements and objects that I use consistently everyday. I tried to open the library up today, as I do everyday, and a message comes up:
"Bad file format. [70]"
Nothing was added, or changed about this file, it has always stayed the same and today, the day that I actually need to use it the most, it refuses to open.
This is not a post asking for help.
I just want to make it clear that I f#cking hate quark, I hate the company, their support lines, their sad attempts to actually helping their customers and their products. Unfortunately, I'm required to use it, as the company I currently work for has not made the switch to InDesign and are very touchy about a designer using anything else than quark for layouts.
It seems as though every time I use Quark, there's always something that messes up, usually stuff that worked fine every other day. Now I have to re-create this library, and bitch them again, about yet another issue.

We should organize as FuckQuark day, where everyone who hates quark sends in hate emails.
I have one hour left before the day is over. I need to get out of here and get a brew. ... any thoughts about FuckQuark day?

where do i sign up?

i dont understand. if EVERYONE hates quark then why does the print industry use it so much? and why is it a requirement for every fucking job that i apply for?
- mayo0
because, Saf, it was better than Pagemaker for so long, it became the industry standard. lot's of places haven't switched to InDesign because a lot of print shops haven't. But print shops don't change because the studios haven't. Vicious cycle. Learn InDesign.
- taragee0
because they have cornered the market, and they know it. bastids.
- lifeinsodium0
so if most people still use quark, i should learn quark to get a job and not indesign ;)
- mayo0
you should learn both, actually.
- lifeinsodium0
or none?
- lifeinsodium0
and work at starbucks.
- lifeinsodium0
for ever and ever.

because for a long time it was the only thing that could do the job "right" ... meaning the print job, not necessarily the design job... and because there was almost no competition (pagemaker... HA!), they maintained their crappy UI and buggy code and lame feature set. Now every one has it, and not many are want to or are able to risk slowing down to learn indesign (which is the only real competition they have).. So you have to know it to get anything printed...
- exador0
simple..
they were one of the 1st out of the gate with a layout program that appealed to most design shops...
lots of problems...lots of crappy work arounds..and lots of pissed off customers..
but...as with many things..
it became entrenched..
and became an institution..
and most older desigers and art directors are not only familiar with it...they've been using it for more than 10 years, type deal.
and if there's one thing older folks hate...its to switch up, and change over to something they're unfamiliar with..
thus, quark stays numbah one..
even though it sucks..
your bosses want you to create your work in program that, if all goes to hell, they themselves have the knowledge to open up and work on .....
anyhow...thats why
;)

I heard quark use to be real good with their users in terms of support, but that was a while ago. Their support went downhill probably after they realized "We dominate 90% of the page layout software market, what are our existing users gonna do ... switch to Pagemaker ?"
So now they probably sit back, laugh at the people emailing asking why the fuck they still haven't released a version for OS X, and enjoy the profits.
Greedy pigs make us squeal.
