okay i have 2 questions here..
1) who would you people suggest using for domain name registration (transfer actually)?
godaddy.com & nameregistrars.net have been HELL to deal with.......2) my current host charges (a lot) for subdomains.. is this something i would be able to cheat and get with a snazzy registrar? (ie pointing sub.domain.com to domain.com/dir)
i hope i make any sense and thank you..

Your host charges you for subdomains? That's silly.

Use Dreamhost. They have their own register...also.

I'm confused- to clarify, your registrar is the person you bought your domain name from and your host is the company currently hosting your site. Either of these can be changed but it all depends on the parties involved as to how painful it can get.
I would suggest moving your registrar to Network Solutions http:/www.netsol.com since they are actually on the "top of the food chain" as far as registrars go (they are the use wholesaler for all domains so essentially every other registar in the US is just buying the domain from them- kind of)
I would suggest moving your hosting to something reliable like Media Temple http://www.mediatemple.com . Your hosting really all depends on what kind of a site it is. If its a personal portfolio then find a host that can fit your budget. If its your companies site then go for a top-notch host or think about creating your own server. Its really not that difficult.
I hope that helps somehow.

Godaddy.com or http://Dotster.com have been good for me...
Hosting:
http://MCHost.com reseller packages... Host Unlimited domains, Unlimited Sub's, yadda yadda yadda... for one price.

pfff.
Do not use Network Solutions. They completely suck when trying to do anything. Use http://www.Godaddy.com But be prepared to get some spam for the first month, then it goes away for some reason. I suggest using a free email source as your mail contacts. That way if you lose hosting you can still authorize changes via your free web host. I have all of my domains under one godaddy account. I log in and have access to all of them. Great tech support and non of the bull shit that netsol will put you through.

I was with mchost for a little while. Not as great as they used to be. Check out http://www.splashhost.com if you going the reseller way.
just my thoughts

sorry for the confusion, in my frantic scramble i blurted 2 not-really-related questions.
my host is dandy. great package.
but they want $30 to renew my domain name - thats silly..
godaddy has dropped the ball, but i will try them again.and the other thing i was wondering, was if subdamains were related to a registrar at all (if i could bypass my HOST somehow and get them for free - im broke.) hehe
THANK YOU ALL!!!!

Subdomains are taken care of on the server. You might be able to run a script in the cgi-bin that mimics this. But not sure. I think I read that somewhere though.
