so Schjetne and I had this discussion and i felt it was worthy to post to NT:
"Jan Schjetne says:
You know what pisses me off? When I see tv shows where teachers in public schools live in big penthouse apartments with rustic brown brick walls with parts in glass brick. That's not very realistic is it?"Why do all those ordinary folks in tv sitcoms (etc) all seem to live in these expensive/trendy/stylized places__
while, we, well most of us, puny designers live i giant buckets_
thoughts plz....

I mean, I'm a fairly well paid graphic designer slash web slave, and I can only DREAM of having an apartment like that before I'm 40.
- thecrab0
maybe cuz it's tv?
:)

i think that is exactly why people watch tv. they see their own shithole every day. they want to see glamour.
sad.

you mean it could all be faked?
_never thought of that
well
prove it
you wise crack!
- schjetne0
TV's not real?
- schjetne0
Does anyone of you guys out there live in lovely apartments (that your dad didn't buy for you) ?
- lvl_thirteen0
prove what? who? huh?
and my apartment is okay. really pretty standard. i want on of those kick as lofts that is basically one big ass room and a bathroom...yeah...i can see it now. big lcd projector on the wall, watching tv as if i was an ant. haha

Definitly entertainment tv isn't supposed to be "realistic" .. or any form of entertainment.
The main evil of tv, in my opinion, is that it doesn't challenge or inspire viewers. It appeals to the lowest impulses (materialism, gossip, vanity, voyurism, mindless repetition of old themes, etc..) , and reinforces them.
But you can't control that. Really. If that's what people want, that's what they want. You can't force anyone to watch intelligent and original programming if they don't want it.

One mans bucket is another mans expensive/trendy/stylized place.

you mean to say that you guys don't already have a big penthouse apartment with rustic brown brick walls with parts in glass brick? i should take pictures of mine and show it to you guys.

See, thats why I don't watch sitcoms. I watch reality shows. It's all real there.
- lvl_thirteen0
oOo: 'Definitly entertainment tv isn't supposed to be "realistic" .. or any form of entertainment.'
not even the news is realistic. it is just a bunch of one-sided propaganda bullshit with some very poor weather forecasting. pretty soon we'll see the newscasters wearing logos for soda pop and laundry detergent. hmm...that gives me an idea.
by the way, tv can inspire sometimes. i watch the food network and home and garden channels, and they often give me ideas.

I'm inspired by Samurai Jack. Awesome art direction.

my house is a shithole... and not even MY shithole, cause i rent.
- IRNlun60
no shit neeko. I don't know whats worst, not having a nice loft, or barely being able to pay rent for my shithole room in a friends basement.
In Boston, you need to make 50k or more to live in your own place. i'm never home anyway so it doesn't really matter.
- lvl_thirteen0
ISN'T BOSTON woops sorry all caps...the most expensive place to live in the u.s.? i thought i remembered hearing that. and 2nd is san fran
- IRNlun60
It because of all the f**ing students. their parents are willing to pay anything for their apartments. so rent just keeps going up. no rent control.
there is a trade off though. new females every year.
