I'm leaving my job in NYC (April 1) and am looking for someone to fill it. The company is a mobile advertising firm that produces printed graphics that are applied to cars, trucks, and other vehicles.

The person we are searching for should be able to do these main things:01 Create, update, maintain 3 websites- You should know PHP4 and Perl in addition to the usual XHTML, CSS, Javascript, etc. I've created a few custom applications for the site and you should feel comfortable editing these as necessity dictates.
02 Produce in-house marketing collateral - This includes everything from printed media kits to rich html email for our account execs.
03 Produce large format design and layouts for clients - You should have a print background with an understanding of what factors affect print designs - namely, target dpi, preflighting, etc. The files we produce can often be huge, so you should know how to optimize files.
-----------------The work for our clients is about 25% in-house creative and 75% agency or supplied creative. That said, we do get the chance to create designs from the ground up for clients such as the US Coast Guard, Hennessy VSOP, Vail Resorts, and Proctor & Gamble.
If you are interested, check out our sites, then send an email to my manager at with the subject "Newstoday Job Post". Be sure to include some sort of introduction explaining your past responsibilities as well as a link to your portfolio. If you have any general questions, react to this thread and I will try and answer you. BTW, starting pay is $11.00

11 dollars?
- metonym0
Yup, I know. there's room for growth but it's gonna be based on performance.

11 bucks in NY...??! yikes...
- paulrand0
11 per minute?
- mrdobolina0
you have to know all those scripting languages and its for 11 bucks an hour? Dude kinko's starts you more than that.
- metonym0
Can't build a portfolio at kinko's.
:]
If you aren't interested, don't respond. no biggie. I happened to know all of these things - and more. I just didn't have much of a portfolio or work experience, so I took the job.
You will get experience, portfolio pieces, and a piece of money here. It's not much, but hell, I do freelance in the evenings to make up the difference. If you don't have a job now, check out the position - make a little money and move on. Think of it as an internship. Or don't.

personally 11 bucks an hour is a kick in the nuts. id rather live with my parents for nothing and develop my portfolio thru contract work
- unknown0
if i were you, id show my boss this thread and see how ridiculous you are getting paid. thats to say, if you are in the 11 dollar an hour range. he may see that he has lost his marbles and up your ante.

Nah, I'm getting out of this city -- grad school baby.
- mrdobolina0
good luck metonym.
Cash Rules Everything Around Me.

I was getting 13 an hour STARTING out as an INTERN in MONTANA
11 bucks an hour is plain BULL SHIT
Ya I said it... that is just rape. And you should be ashamed to pay that low... that is right up there with kiddy porn.
Its just not right.

ps.. i would rather work for free and do my own work to build my portfolio out of FICTION rather than put that type work in my portfolio....

if someone offered my 11 an hour i'd laugh in their face hysterically, harder and harder i'd laugh until faking a near passing out episode by falling into his desk and knocking all his precious bull-shit he bought with all the extra money he saved. you know the shit. that little metal thingy that when you move it it rocks back and forth. then i'd fake another 'faint' and throw myself into his 'hard work and dedication pays off in the end' b.s. black and white poster of a frigging whale jumping out of the ocean with a sunset in the background and send it crashing to the floor.
after it's all over with i'd sit down and wipe the tears from my eyes and as serious as i could, i'd say "sounds good, where do i sign and when can i start."
- k0na_an0k0
oh, and then as he looks at me with that blank expression on his face i'm going to say 'I'M KIDDING YOU STUPID F*CK!" get up and walk out only stopping for a moment to make out with the little hot phone girl working the front desk.

nice one kona.
I mean the guy is blatantly robbing people, calling it "getting portfolio pieces"... that money would suck in Milwaukee, but NYC? FUCK...

This thread title shoud.
Any suckers who I can reel in with my crappy company want my underpaid job as a whore.
- mrdobolina0
nice that you are getting out of there metonym.
- metonym0
Let me reiterate that *I* am not paying the salaries here. i'm doing a favor for the boss who did a favor for me. As for the 'laugh in the face bit', fine. I am also just trying to hook someone up here with a little flow. When I first moved to the city, I couldn't find jacksh** and had no contacts. Perhaps someone else is in the same situation and I can offer them a way to keep their head above water. Finally, yes, the pay is little but let's not get away from the fact that, at base, this job is mostly production work. It has the opportunity for creativity but it is mostly checking files and making sure specs are met.
The web site is the most rewarding part of the job since carte blanche is often given by the management.

true metonym, but the laundry list of scripting necessary is ridiculous.
