A job ad I saw today, something I felt I was qualified for, had this in its requirements:

"BA in art, design, or a computer-related field required"

Now, I'm thinking, ok. I got a BA, but it was in liberal arts. fine, I got a decent amount of design and computer knowledge, all self-taught. just cos I don't have a BA specifically in that field disqualifies me?

right now I'm thinking, they don't really need someone with specialized knowledge, else they wouldn't say they need a art/design OR technical knowledge. I'm thinking of sending a resume anyway just to piss them off.

usually your portfolio and (sometimes more importantly) your experience and work history will make up for this.

I've always preferred people with design degrees though since you'll know they'll have formal experience with reviews/giving-taking critcism of designs (when I was in a position to hire designers once upon a time...).

Apply anyway. Just get your name/face/portfolio out there...If you get an interview..even better. Even if you get shot down..that is one more interview under your belt.

A lot of employers don't care what the degree is specifically in as long as you have the college/educational experience.

I would say 9 out of 10 times, I would hire someone with real experience and skill over someone with just a degree.

Like mentioned above, there is a certian learned experience when you study Design in a university. You learn how to handle formal crits, lectures and such to colleagues, etc.

That is something a designer can usually only get through going to school. And, definitely something employers look for.

But, if you have the skills, they will see that.

    Send the resume in.

I say go for it. I went into a LOT of interviews where I had no clue about what they wanted...but I learned a lot just by talking with people about how to handle myself, etc. It takes some pressure off going into a situation knowing you wont get the job..but are just learning.
