I just recently picked up PHP and I am quite pleased with the way it performs. Currently my whole website www.skatemag.com is done on ASP and MSSQL, I'm thinking when we go back to do a redesign we will be moving to PHP/MySQL on linux. I'm converted!

yeah, you're going to get an overwhelming response of PHP on this board.
PHP is relatively easy which is good if you are a designer and want to spend more time in photoshop than in msdn learning the API.

Both are fine, but the next gen is Aestiva HTML/OS. So easy to learn, fast, multiplatform, Kicks bootie.

Both.
mitsu, no offense, but shut the hell up.

PHP is, in my opinion, more versatile than ASP, its connection with a MySQL is quite tight and it's becoming more and more used in sites with a Flash frontend. Besides that, I'm always supportive of an Opensource (and free) scripting language / database.

"mitsu, no offense, but shut the hell up."
none taken... what did i say?

you gonna answer me, or are you too busy trying to find a frame for that wrox press book?

Don't think it really matters. Whatever you can get the job done with effeciently. I know ASP, I use it. If the situation arises that I need PHP to be more effecient, I'll use it.
It's just syntax.. Doesn't matter what you use to get the end result.

I'm just not in the mood for your routine banter about how ASP rules the web. Listening to you preach about how you sit in your little cube-farm commanding ultimate ASP solutions for multi-million dollar projects all the while neglecting to mention that the cost is more-so related to the fucking licensing fees rather than the development services. In the end, it's all rather tiring, opinionated and about as irritating as kidney stones.
there's your answer, now kindly oblige and shut the hell up.

"Listening to you preach about how you sit in your little cube-farm commanding ultimate ASP solutions for multi-million dollar projects "
lol
i wouldn't be in the mood for me either if i talked like that all the time.
fair enough, i'll stay out of these threads from now on if it'll make you happy.

well, i certainly don't feel that way. if one doesn't want to read something, then one would simply skip over it and go to the next reply to the thread. i think someone needs to go take a nap

The best tool is always the one you know.
Delivering is everything and you should always use the tool that will make you successful.
That being said, my choice is PHP. I come from a background of Perl and C, which made the move to PHP very easy. Although I have used ASP on a number of projects, I feel that it obviously lacks in many of the departments that PHP excels in. That added with the huge and helpful PHP user community and a practically endless supply of free classes, extensions and code examples, make PHP a powerhouse of a development tool. PHP is also much more expandable than ASP and can easily employ the use of code written in C, C++, and Java as well as compiled modules to cut down on run-time CPU usage. The PEAR repository (http://pear.php.net) also makes life with PHP much easier by creating coding standards and web-based module installation for many frequently needed core code objects such as database abstraction and error handling.
ASP’s power lies in it’s controlled OS dependant environment, purchased modules and interaction with external applications. This makes it a poor choice for building portable web applications, and limits your client-base. To be brutally honest, ASP is a language that was slapped together using out-of-date MS technologies, and the only reason that it is even used, is because any idiot can build up an NT box and pay $250.00 per hour for someone to walk them through fixing their own problems. Not to mention, it is slow as shit.
Oh... and Mitsu, I agree, shut up. I seldom post here and I constantly see your criticism on every post that I read. Enough with the preaching man. Get working on some of those million-dollar applications.

Don't let the PHP reich push you around. They're just big cuddly babies in real life.
- mike0
awwwe. mitsu knows we really love him, his activity alone accounts for 30% of the NT traffic. hugs and kisses to you mitsu, keep grinding out that asp for ti and don't think twice about subjecting yourself to alternatives baby.
I <3 mitsu! (bumper stickers are in the making )
