first my apologies for posting this twice! hey we're wanting to redesign the graphic elements of our web-zine. we'd like to keep the current layout, if possible. my conundrum is whether to stay with clean and techy or maybe go with more of a fine art look for the header and support graphics. i've tried a couple different looks and well, everything i do looks like crap to me. so i throw myself on to your humble opinions. oh, and as somebody said below... brutal honesty is appreciated. feel free to shred the rest of the site to pieces if you wish as well. http://www.skatemag.com thanks in advance

Technically, it seems to work well (I'm on Redhat Linux 8, Mozilla 1.0.1...). I didn't notice any major markup/code related problem.
As for layout, I dig the simple grid style and think it works well with your contnet - especially since you seem to have quite a bit. The one layout gripe I have is the 'ad banner' section on the seccond level pages. I don't like the big box at the bottom with the 3 ads. It seems just thrown together and doesn't flow with the rest of the layout. The little ad banner could have easily been placed in the right-most column at the bottom and it would clean it up a bit.
For the art/graphic portion of your design, I don't think it's bad at all. But, it is all subjective - if you want a different feel to it, that is up to you. You should do two versions, a 'fine art' one and this one and then put them side by side to compare.

yeah... the secondary pages ads were thrown together actually... had two people call me in one day and had to get something up quick. definitely need to clean that up. thanks!

i would say keep it clean, but lose the techy feeling. the grid behind the logo, the dotted lines all over the page sort of make me dizzy.
i think you can do a lot w/ this design just by simplifying the elements that you already have to make it less busy.
that's just my humble opinion.
