I got 576MB ... Is that enough?

I wouldnt think so.
I have 2 gigs o ram to run After Effects.
I would think the same if not more to run something as high end as maya

i have 768 it runs quite well
im sure you can get away with the amount you have. Maya takes up the whole screen anyway so just close all other programs and work in it alone, to increase ram to program. A friend was able to run it on only 256megs of ram, he said it was slightly non responsive at times, but the fact that he could run it at all made it all ok.

never used Maya on a Mac.
On a PC 576 is fine for modeling + texturing, even with photoshop open.
for particles and/or dynamics you might need more.
