What is Linux like? Can I run Photoshop with it or do I have to use Gimp? What Adobe software is available for it? How user-friendly is it? If there's a free OS I could check(and boot into) for my Mac, that'd be cool.

There is no native support for commercial software from Adobe, Macromedia or other large companies like that...but GIMP is close enough to Photoshop to get the job done. Killustrator (which I think has been renamed) is close to Illustrator...
There are ways, Win4Lin, Wine, and other emulators for example, that allow you to run some windows software on Linux.
Linux is open-source, not 'free' so to say. Although, you can download the entire OS for free from any distrobution site - if you have patience and good bandwidth. The average ISO file is at least 600+ meg.
With the latest versions of Redhat and Mandrake I would say it is very user-friendly. Some advanced knowledge of systems is still required. Software installation is completely different from that of a windows system.
MAC is a closer relative to Linux than Windows is. And, there are still some technologies not available yet - like the Shockwave mime type.
I run Redhat 8 on my IBM thinkpad (pictured below) and on my SGI visual workstation now.
The only place I use Windows is at work. And, even that will be changing soon.
Here's a quick screen grab while I was typing this.
