go with the steel strings, its much better to learn on. Its much harder to switch from nylon to steel then the other way. Its all in the calisties.

I'd recommend a Takamine guitar, EN or EAN series, if you can find one, or Yamaha CPX

if you find the mythical land of 200 dollar martins or gibsons, please, call me. martin makes ukeleles that are more expensive than that.
I like and own a couple of alvarez accoustics, and i know they sell in that range. martin has a different brand name in that range as well, Sigma. decent guitar.
my advice like some others, take another guitarist with you. make him pick some, then you pick from there. gl.
