where do you draw the line?
sometimes i get inspired by some art work and knowingly and unknowingly produce similar work.

I think everyone does...
I think, IMO, a rip is when someone steals another work - and calls it their own.
This is when they don't change it..and it looks exactly the same as the original.
That is the definition according to Copyright law - to be violate copyright it as to be the theft of a completed work...not a similar style, or anything like that.
I find very similar work to be just as immoral...but the legality has to be questioned.

That's a real tough one for me. I for one really like the use of crop marks, corner marks, and shading as found here:
and would love to use a similar theme in my next portfolio site but I am afraid of ripping (or being accused of ripping) his site.
I too would like to hear any insights people could give.

and
kristuit salu says it is inspired by Build (not to dis KS but it happen to be here) and so am i..
could me or him be rippers?

rip = copying one work
inspiration = copying more than one work

i think crop marks are part of design...
its up to you how to use them..
there are alot of work with crop marks so i think you should be safe...

MrDinky-
Hmmm...I can definitely see the inspiration at work, but imo I wouldn't call that a rip.
Very strong inspiration.

I agree with SP's opinion on it.
For that B7en site, the elements used are nothing new, and if you incorporated them, it's doubtful you would be seen as copying that site. It also depends on how you go about doing it too.
I think feeding off of sites for inspiration is normal, but if you're visiting that site 10 times a day and going back and forth while you're designing something, I think you may encounter a RIP eventually.

michael c. place = Build is one of nicest guy around...
someone told me that in my other work, i was ripping Build and i didnt know i was doing it (i seen his design and had it in my head for few years and didnt know it was his and didnt know who Build was).
so i emailed him and he sent me the orginal work and i agreed that it was too simliar and decided to change it. sometimes you dont know if its a rip. i certainly didnt until some one pointed out. Over since than i have been a Build fan.

interesting thread. design by build looks inspired by http://www.neubauberlin.com but not a rip. style is style. don't be afraid of what a couple of goons might say. explore. experiment. no big deal. we make up a small part of the design world here.

i think everyone knows inside if they're ripping, or they're simply being influenced. no one here can point and say "here's the line" but at the same time i think we all know it.

Ask Ian Anderson.

is this a rip or inspiration:
Trueistrue vs. prada
cina: http://www.trueistrue.com/tt3/ht…
prada:
http://www.prada.com/the logo font looks awefully similar, if you actually study the void in the letter P and R in cina's Pearl it looks identical to the letter d in prada... interesting. what do you guys think?
- ********0
very similar...
its like buying fake stuff..."hey got a new Prada wallet for really CHEAP!.. no wait it says Prado"
- jking760
maybe we're forgetting "parody"
- ovalle0
hah good one dinky.... although i have actually seen a fashion store called prado.. so maybe there is actually one...
here is some more info too:
Details: WeWorkForThem were approached to do branding for a new upscale restaurant. Trademarks were drawn by hand and all discarded for a more simple and modern approach. These are a couple examples from the series. All type is hand-drawn
