they're not new, but I've been listening to a lot of Stereolab lately. Their sound is so diverse; from the soft melodies to the crunchy guitars. If you haven't listened to stereolab this week. . . Do it.

emo is short for "emotional"...it is supposed to be the kind of music that is so wrought with emotions that the lead singing is known to cry...ok so that kind of music died fast...just think died black hair, cuffed up pants, tight t-shirts...the greasers/ponyboy return!BENNN- yes! you really should check out aniversary. they don't have a female lead perse...but she does sing an awfull lot, maybe even a song or two on her own..good stuff

I tend to think of Death Cab as indie myself (although quite abit more intricate than say the indie of Pavement).
Doesn't Rainer Maria have a female singer? I'm always seeing them touted as "emo"... even though it seems as if the word has been bastardized abit to include things that really don't resemble each other anymore.

Oh yeah... they're not like heavy rock...but they have a thick shoegazy sound from time. And they have a girl singer on some songs: Medicine.
Also... if you go back to bubble gum alternapop there's always Velocity Girl, the Breeders, Throwing Muses and Belly and stuff.
Plus there was Helium... which was sorta heavier indie rock.

definately get the rocking horse winner, she did the background vocals on the latest dashboard cd. Im actually seeing her band with coheed and cambria in a couple weeks.
Also check out track 10 of From Autumn to Ashes disc, the song is called Short Stories With Tragic Endings. The music of from autumn to ashes is probably a little harder than what you're looking for, but the female vocals on that track are absolutely amazing.
