Well hells bells - NTL have just said they would match the agency offer I got.
But they can't make it official until Monday.
That throws a spanner in the works as I was going to call the agency today and accept their offer.
What to do, what to do.
This is almost making up for the past few months struggling for interviews and work!

Maybe tell the agency about your dillema - they might offer more...
- jevad0
That's what I was thinking - but I don't want them to think I am trying to play them..
I'm not greedy - I am thankful that I am being offered anything at all!
I think I forgot to mention that the agency is a 6-month contract but he said they would take me on permanent after that whereas NTL is permanent.
And at the agency they said I get my birthday off. That pretty much swung it for me yesterday.
argh.

Congrats Jevad - Looks like you're having a run of luck!
- jevad0
yeah thanks man - I guess I am - I feel really lucky...but I am plum confused now. It would have been so much easier if NTL had not matched the offer I got from the agency...
- mrming0
Who are the agency?
- ********0
just be honest with the agency, say how you'd really enjoy working with them, but now you are in a bit of a *quandry* as ntl seem desparate for you to.....
then skin up a fat one and wait for their further benefit offers......
- mrming0
Well they certainly need you bad!
Normally I would say a telco would be a safe bet for job security but NTL are normally on the verge of going bust so...

"I think I forgot to mention that the agency is a 6-month contract but he said they would take me on permanent after that whereas NTL is permanent."
unless this is guaranteed, take the other position. and to reiterate the views expressed yesterday, 2 important things are the people you'll wind up working with, the work you'll actually be doing (is either more fun/rewarding/challenging than the other?).
i suppose informing your contact at the agency to let them know that you're other opportunity is still negotiating, might behoove them to further negotiate with you - making this a much easier decision.

In my experience it's a real arse to work as an internal designer for a big company (like NTL). You have to go through loads more bureaucracy and the work becomes quite boring after a while. At least with an agency you'll have varied work and you seem to already like the people.
Maybe be honest with the agency, you don't have to be a shark about it (which is sometimes the best way of being a shark!) Also ask about the holidays, any other benefits (travel etc). You probably already know which one you would enjoy working at more, go with your instinct.

The agency has done some nice and diverse work. I'd go with them. I expect at NTL you'd be a small cog in a big machine.

Everytime I see the ntl logo a shiver of typographic horror goes down my spine.

ming, mitsu, vespa and blofeldt - thanks for your opinions and comments - I am going to call the agency right now and be upfront with them.
will let you know what happens!
- vespa0
Good luck!

Understand your point about not wanting to play the agency off against NTL, there is no point in being greedy, besides your salary sounds quite good........
However; it would be worth mentioning to them that the real cause of the dilema is that the NTL job is a permanent position, whereas they are offering a contract possibly leading to permanence..... That might open the door to them offering you more than just 6 months security, just an idea.

don't work for ntl, they can't last much longer. Their servides are shit and so are their customer realtions. Thas my opinion, and all my mates too, who for some had ntl.

update:
the agency said they will make it permanent rather than 6 month contract.
Think I am going to go with the agency....
- mitsu0
whoever you pray to should get a little thanks right now...
(unless you just pray to a toilet)
congrats!
