AE masking issue

again, this is my first time using AE.
tweening object into mask. invisible to visible (add). can't get the mask to stay put. no matter how i apply the mask, the things cruises with the moving object. any advise would be helpful. i'm sure it's something simple, just a tad green i am.

A mask will allways move with the position of the layer. If you want to "mask" a moving layer, you need to create a matte. Create the shape you want masked in a layer above the one you want to show. Then under the matte pulldown, choose the layer you just created.
