Paths in AE question.

WHY THE HELL DO PATHS FROM ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR AND PHOTOSHOP NOT IMPORT LIKE THE GODAMNED MANUAL SAYS?! Yeah, can't seem to get my simple path in illustrator to import into AE--namely because the "paste" option is always grey. Any thoughts? Thanks.

When pasting paths into AE from Illustrator you should be pasting them into the mask window.
Double click on the mask layer and then paste

This is honestly going to make me pull my hair out...SO...I have Illustrator 9 and AE 5.5--I'm VERY new to AE, so I look up directions on pasting paths from illustrator or photoshop into an AE document as a mask. I follow directions to a T...it doesn't seem difficult...but then, no paste button (greyed out) and Ctrl-V is worthless. Honestly, been trying different things for maybe an hour. ARGH.

Ok, this is what I do, right from the start:
-select the path in Illustrator.
-from the top menu, Edit>Copy
-go to AE. Start a compostion if you havent yet
- go to Layer > New > Solid
any color will do-Edit > Paste
thats it! gotta work.

As for illustrator settings....AICB and preserve paths, right?

yep! those are the right settings. Just double checked.
try a reinstall and see what happens.
