Flash MX Bible is good.
Flash ActionScript Bible is also good.
Both are $50.00 but well worth the loot.

I've just got ActionScripting in FlashMX by Phillip Kerman. Pretty comprehensive but it still slow going trying to teach myself in spare time. I've also got the Flash5 bible from 18 months ago. Both from AmazonUK.
I'm fine with animation but getting a web site similar to some of you guys and gals seems light years away !!!

are any of these books good DESIGN books? that i what im primarily getting it for.
i want to learn how to optimize, animate, and learn how to load efficiently.
im not concerned with database integration, asp functionality, or any of that. it needs to speak to a designer NOT a programmer.

nah, the two books i mentioned are techie books, very little about good design

agree with above. if you don't have the O'Reily's book, do yourself a favor and by it over anything else.

dragslidefade is a wicked awesome book. it is mostly actionscript, but it does help optimize your flash movies.
another book ive been reading lately is hillmancurtis' MTIV. lots of good stuff in that book.
