3d stroke for 3d apps?

I'm trying to achieve a similar effect as this AfterEffects plugin:

except I'm wondering if something similar is available for any 3d apps like 3dsmax or Maya.
Basically: the ability to keyframe the start and end point of a line, alone a spline! Thx

offcourse it is possible to do such effects both in 3dsmax and maya.
I don't know how exacly it is done in max, because i don't use that application much, but i'm sure there has to be a extrude along spline function in it too...
in Maya...
while in animation mode, under the animate menu, there is a Create Animated Sweep function...
Look that up in the manual/help files....
