What would you consider to be the max file size for a flash site?
Leaning towards broadband users however considering the 56k user “which are the majority, at least in the US.”
Thanks.

even being on dsl, if i see a 1mb+ loading screen, i usually close my browser and never look back...

for the major entertainment based sites - 150k max each page.
so for a flash movie, the initial load is 150k and each page/section contained within would be a max of 150k.
In my experience, this has been a standard across all the 'major' sites i have worked on. makes it somewhat limiting - but thats the nature of the beast.

You can fit lots of content in 150K, just make sure you load as much of the site you can dynamically (on clicking section navigation).
Most heavy flash sites I've seen first page range from 0 - 250K.

I try not to load more than 40k at a time, but 150k would be the absolute maximum.

Yeah, I'd say a 150K preloader is big enough. Just put some cool loop of music and motion to it. If people have something to look at (or play with) they don't mind waiting as much. remember, less is more!
side note: they say the biggest HTML pages should get (graphics etc) is 70K.

wow... that has grown from around 45k. I used to make sure I was under 50k if possible.
150k is good for broadband. I say you dev 2 versions and sniff the connection, send the 56k to a more optimized version. They should know better by now. Broadband experience isn't called that for no reason. They get the same thing, only a bit choppier.
NOT!!!! (<~~remember that?)
Just do your best. It is going to take around 15-20 sec to load 150k on 56k. You loose them at 10. Sux....
GOOD LUCK!

I usually make the main movie under 200k, and break up all the movies.
I think the best is still to keep it under 100k so that the user sees something besides a preloading bar!

respect the little people. maximum optimization. actionscript. common assets library. minimum file size.

So the consensus is 150 – 200 max!
Look this was actually a productive tread. :)Thanks y’all

There's no such thing as "too big."
Hehehehe. Just joking.

As ususal, I would say this depends on the audience/situation. Most often I would be annoyed by files over 200k but there have been situations where I'm willing to wait for something bigger.
I think breaking it up into smaller pieces is key though. Really - what huge piece of content couldn't be split up smaller than 100k?

dude, I still run 28k!

There are a lot of sub 56K connections still around. Don't forget people on laptops in cheap hotels, internet enabled Palms, cell phones, watches, etc. It's best to give a quick/short preloader leting them know what they're in for. That way the can better choose if it's worth their time.

i usually have 300 k preloaders and 900 k first pages... no one/ client has ever complained...
