Anyone else have the problem of text getting slightly heavier when you convert it to outlines in Illustrator?
If so, do you know how to prevent this from happening?

It doesn't get heavier, it only LOOKS heavier on screen. When you print it, you'll see that it is actually ok.

They actually are printing slightly heavier. It's really only noticable in the small text but it's definately heavier.

Strange. Never happened to me...

make sure you only have a fill and no outline.

and make sure the mitres aren't sticking out. those bastards suck.

I've made sure there was no stroke still my little letters are too fat. I know this shouldn't be happening... so very frustrating.
BTW I'm on a PC, Illustrator 9.

Anyone else with any idea's ?

no suggestions, but the error has always occured with me on a mac ever since i've been working. it is a subtle difference, but it is always there if i outline things (no, there is no stroke or mitre issues).

Once again thanks testpilot. I've been digging everywhere to find the reason behind this. I feel a bit better that someone else has noticed this.

glad i could help you feel a little more at ease...it's a strange thing. logically, outlined fonts shouldn't gain anything when converted to outlines because a font is an eps outline as well, but it does gain. makes no sense to me!

is this on your laser printer, or coming from a high output device at a printer or service bureau? I think fonts have built-in "hinting" for printing out on laser printers and such, and this info wouldn't be retained after you convert to outlines. But I may be wrong.

paulrand, i think you're right. i've noticed the gain primarily on laser/fiery printers. maybe this 'hinting' is the problem. sounds right at least.

I haven't noticed this on high end print jobs, just laser printers. This hinting may explain things...

ive never had a problem when it comes back from the printer, but i notice it when it comes off the desk jet and on the screen too.
pretty wierd

That would probably explain why I haven't noticed anything like that, since I usually outline fonts primarily before I send stuff to the print shop.
