i also heard it from a little birdy that liek sony, apple has some kind of anti-pirate feature that is not fully implemented so you cant use cd-rw....
another reason could be that, they shipped yuo with cd-r only burner...

it's weird on my iBook. it says it can only write on cd-rs (a blank one even came with the laptop), but i've found that i can only burn on cd-rws. maybe you have the opposite problem?

Is it in warranty? Apple should be able to talk you through what features you have, and how to check it... There's also a Hardware Test CD in the box... (Apple support will tell you how to use it)

if its relatively new ibook or other it should be under warrenty (i think 1year).
BU T if not, you can call them and tell them your problem and see if they would do a exchange..
or
try the store you bought it from..but mind you, my comps took 7 weeks to come back..

Is it a new CD-RW?
I think they wear out over time if you keep erasing + writing.
