I have a photo that I need to incorporate into an Illustrator file. I have converted the photo to CMYK and saving it out as a .tif at 300dpi. When I place the CMYK tif image in Illustrator the 'on screen' colors are a mess. My question to you all, will this correct itself when I send it to print? Unfortunately I don't have access to a printer to test this on until the morning, so I thought I'd call on the wealth of experience that seems to hang out here.

It 'should' look fine. Make sure you have 'cmyk preview' turned on. RGB screens just can't cmyk so theres always some diff on the screen.

Thanks Wildpony,
I finally got the file to a printer and the colors in the photograph are a mess. Any insight as to how I should handle bringing CMYK photo's into Illustrator would be greatly appreciated.
This may help illustrate my problem more clearly:

if you are on a mac, there are a variety of factors that can effect color. they vary depending on what version of illustrator you use and what version of os you are running. check under file>color settings to make sure you have the right monitor profile selected. if you use color sync, the calibration of your monitor can change color of the imagery as well.

You should be using a profile to convert your rgb to cmyk. then when you are in illustrator you need to make sure that you are using the same profile in your set up.
BTW You can proof CMYK on an RGB Monitor, Heres proof---

Illustrator is not a layout program. Bring it in to Quark or InDesign.

Thanks testpilot and Q! The CMYK profile in my PS and Illustrator Color Settings didn't match up. Any guidance as to what a good general setting should be, or is that all dependent on the printer? I currently have them both set to U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) V2.
Brooke - Just wondering why I shouldn't layout simple projects in Illustrator. I use InDesign for documents with multiple pages, but find Illustrator works really well for CD covers, brochures etc...
btw.. I'm on a PC
