It might not be that advanced actually!
Can anyone tell me how you would create a dvd that plays on a tv using a tv safe area but doesn't show the tv safe area when used on a computer?
Also how to auto detect whether the tv is widescreen or standard 4:3...so it'll letterbox on a 4:3 and play widescreen on a widescreen

Then how do you author a dvd in widescreen so it doesn't squash itself on a 4:3 tv but plays in letterbox mode. Is it a software issue?

You can encode for widescreen specific tvs natively and you can also take the widescreen format and include the curtains (black bars) for use on 4:3 format.
Call you local post house for some specs...they should be able to help you with litle effort.
