well finally got an offer for a job, too bad the salary won't even pay my bills, nor give me money for food and gas. i need to negotiate but scared as hell to, don't want to screw anything up. any tips?
I know, i know, be happy i got the job, but damn, i made this amount in a small town, now i'm in a city where rent is more than triple.

negotiate, you big wuss. anybody who takes the first offer is a chump. :P

i plan on negotiating, just never had to before.
depending upon how accurate the AIGA salary survey is, i'm about $8k below the base salary for this area and position.

Negotiate mate. Don't take shit money just becaise its a job. If it isn;t paying you enough to live on then it's simple - don't take it!
I got offered an awesome job last friday working for the BBC in their web dept - but I didn;t take it cos it was like...$16 an hour - and I have almost 5 years working experience...that really was taking the piss.
good luck

Tell them you are also considering another offer and that they are willing to pay you "X" much more and see what they say.

If the negotiations don't go as planned, get a 2nd jobby that's flexible, fun & somehow beneficial to the one you have. You know, something that'll allow you to get discounts for much needed supplies or allow you meet all sorts of people that'll get you some hook-ups for future jobbages/needs/etc (if you're the talkative type).

You could always work at the mall:P
No, seriously, i told my interviewer that i needed x amount of money to even pay my bills, and they were happy to work with me. I think it was because i was honest and upfront about it. they gave me a bit more than i had asked and all is good. just be cool about it, and the rest is cake:)
