D-Kitchen Backgrounds?

How does Digital Kitchen create those sick backgrounds in their work such as in the following movie . . . http://www.d-kitchen.com/work/qu…
is it 3d ( maya/ lightwave,. etc) or is it all video shot with high contrast and then tinted/ track matted/ keyed?

my guess would be Maya, with image maps.

sorry to take over your thread but. how do you get gradients to look good in after effects??
I've tried and tried but the all look like hell.anyone?

I usually use the gradients on a keyed out peice of video or track matted object/video

ummm..
one possibility is to record video footage - then use Boujou to get desired data from film and finally import that info in any 3d program.cheers

Pixeldust is another amazing application.

you can render it with a cartoon filter to achieve the same effect. Kind of like the volkswagon, starbucks, and lugs, commerical psysops did.
