A buddy is starting a marketing company, wants me to be his one-stop design shop. He wants to offer my services to his clients, and get a 40-50% comission. Is this right? How does the comission thing work?

He reckons that it´s the norm, bringing in the clients, and wants a ´wholesale´ price, expecting (say) 20 websites a year, 30 flash emails, 40 logos... etc.

    Any knowledge, anyone??

Depends on the type of project... you should stipulate if it's a 10Kjob for example, he shouldn't get half... something like over$2000, it drops to 20%, over 5K it drops to 10%, etc.

Also, charge him a higher rate... or add 10-20% extra hours.

Also, who's going to be interacting with the client? If you're sending all the emails, doing all the presenting of designs, going to meetings, etc. he definitely shouldn't get that rate, only a small comission.

40% MAYBE for a producer that manages the project, a sales guy that only passes the job to you and you do all of the talking with the client and he does nothing, 15%max.
