do you think it is easyer to draw freehand or to in an app. like Illustrator? Im not sure if I should stick with just ink and paper or move to a vector program as such. Any suggestions?

If you want to make a career or a living using your drawing skills, you're going to have to learn illustrator or freehand one day :)

what about just using photoshop?

sketch on paper, scan and trace in illi

I think (like anything...) it depends on the style you are going for. If I want to do something really cartoony or logo-like I'll just draw it in illustrator. If I want lots of calligraphic lines and such I'll draw and ink traditionally but then streamline it for touch-ups or coloring in illustrator. So, either way, you need to learn it.

I usually draw it on paper first, scan it in, trace in illustrator

must it be in illustrator or can I get the same results using photoshop?

there are vector drawing tools in photoshop but I would go with illustrator - you have more options, controls, etc..

I tend to do all the base colors in illustrator then maybe take the finished art to photoshop if I want to add some effects, blurs, color dodge etc. I wouldn't recommend doing all the colors in photoshop. Kind of a pain.

i draw freehand .. scan it in to streamline ....
you have to find that balance between both worldsand to use photoshop or illustrator --that depends on if u want it vector or raster
- matt250
also depends on what you are using it for - if it is for print you should use illustrator

yeah, i have played around with photoshops vector tools and then gone to flash and see what I can do their... it seems like flash offers almost the same kind of tools that illustrator has, but im just not sure if i am willing to spend $400 on an app. that could possibly do the same as one or more programs i already have.

flashes drawing tools aren't bad. however, i think the quality kinda sucks if you export from it to say psd or ai

for the love of gods - don't draw in FLASH!!! ahhhhhh ... that program will be the death of design i swear ...

most of my presentation stuff for work is a bastard mix.
i start by hand, scan, draw some more, print, and draw on top of it again and then BAM! it's ready for presentation. it gives it a nice polished yet hand drawn look. very clean. clients dig it.

how easy is it to learn illustrator?
- matt250
pretty easy - just make yourself use it. I used to do stuff in psd that I should have done in illustrator but i was more comfortable with psd -- just force yourself to use it and you will catch on
