i've never done anything with 3d apps before but was wanting to start with one. i'm interested in something that isn't very hard to use (something i can doodle in) and with the ability to do motion.
list them programs!

Maxon Cinema 4D is king!
Lightwave ain't too shabby either.

Cut to the chase and get Maya.
Don't be intimidated by the apparent complexity, it's fairly intuitive once you familiarize yourself with the basic concepts. It can CRUSH 2d animation packages with it's spline interpolation. It just dropped in $ big time, there's even a free training version available that's pretty spiffy.
Fo Real.

i feel that cinema 4d is a very decend app i have been using it for some time as well as 3d max 4 for the pc, and i think it is definitely the best choice. consider maya 4.5 osx for serious uses, but i think cinema is good for anything as well (please correct me someone if necessary)
have fun

well put.
Cinema 4D's quality is the ease of use (especially for newbies) but has professional output and very good render speeds.
But that is just my opinion.

it has motion in it. can't animate objects but that can be dopped into cinema easy enough. That's what I do anyways. Simple interface too. about $3000. great with nurbs. wait till version 4 comes though.

i agree with everyone here, cinema 4D is great stuff... but for real, if you don't want any limitations, get maya 4.5 it's not THAT hard... it always sucks to get into something and get limited by the software when you really decide to kick some ass... but i've seen some AMAZING stuff from cinema 4D artist... but maya is far better!
