I took this from a message board and I think it would be interesting to hear some opinions abouit it:
Hi, I've been a fan of MK12 for some time and am trying to recreate a similar effect to the one they often use. I'm not aiming to copy them :) just implement the 2D (flat) style animation in a 3D environment. Have a look @ these vids 2 see what I'm talking about:
UltraLoveNinja:

http://media.mk12.com/quicktime/…At the moment I'm rendering 2D anim in AfterEffects with an Alpha channel to use as a mask in MAX - my major question is how they line compositions up like in the Infinity piece? I've tried but it's difficult to align objects both to make the composition and get scale right - is there an easier way of doing this? And secondly how do they create the 2D anims? such as trees and 2D vector objects in UltraNinja Love? I can create these but am unsure @ what stage to try to animate them.
Any links or help greatly appreciated,
Grey.

There was a post about this yesterday, I think. Here's a link to some software that could be used, although it doesn't look perfect.

You could always trace it : ).
If you discover anything else, let me know.

the 2d vector artwork is cell animation...drawn frame by frame. like illustrator vectors revealed by keyframing.
the 3d is done i believe right in AE 5.5 with the 3d engine...allows you to animate 2d objects in Z space... on your timeline, click the cube icon to activate the 3d atmosphere.

forz allready said it, its just aftereffects, aftereffects works just like a 3d program in terms of animation, just bring your vectors in and activate the 3d, also aftereffects has cameras and lights that you can use for better control, and it also lets you import camera animations from maya.
simply import your vectors and move them around the 3d space.

they take it a step further though.

actually, we created Untitled: Infinity about two years before AE 5.5 came out...
the original post is correct. we used a combination of after effects (4.1 at the time) and maya. it was a painstaking process but we were happy with the result...
no traditional cell animation techniques were used in the making of either films...
