Dead Hard Drive

I started up my computer and it doesn't see one of my drives, I never got any errors and I don't get any now. I checked the cables and connections and windows still doesn't see the drive.
Any suggestions? Any links to articles on how to get information off of a dead drive. I don't want to take it in to a shop to see if they can extract it.

There's no clear cut way to extract the data off of it that I can tell you about. More than likely you'll have to use a data recovery service.

is the drive even spinning up?

Western Digital 120GB
It doesn't seem like the drive is spinning, the computer crashed and when I started up the computer didn't see it. Taking it in for service isn't really an option I want to take for multiple reasons.

porn, esko? is it because it's full of porn?
just kidding.
it's strange that crashing would stop it from spinning. sure data could become corrupt, but not spinning sounds like a 'hard' problem rather than just data.
try switching it with your primary drive to see if it spins then (obviously it won't boot without an OS, but at least you'll know if it spins).
if it does spin, and you can't be bothered to try and fix it properly, there are a lot of tools out there for data recovery (in fact most of those professional data recovery services just use out of the box packages). there're some trials and freeware examples of that kind of software here:

good luck though, i know it's a real bitch to lose important stuff.

Thanks for the info, I didn't think about switching it with my primary to see if it's *actually* dead. I'll do that as soon as I get home.
And yes I really don't want them to know how deep my fetishes run.

if its a mac and its set to "cable select" it tends to disappear for whatever reason. If you cant find it- reset the jumpers. How long has it been in your system before this happened?

it's been in my system for about a year now. pc.
so when i start this thing up it starts to spin and then clicks, and then starts to spin and then clicks, etc., etc., until it finally starts up and the OS doesn't see the drive.
