lookin to break in to sound design, test my skills, see if i can make a run of it. slight problem: no real visual design skill... any suggestions on where to start, without hiring a designer to build my site (hint: breaking in = no cash ) ? thinking interactive media stuff, soundscaping...open to just about anything.

youve lost me.
you want to break into not only visual design but into sound design as well.
so youve no experience in either and you wanna tag both? daaaaaaamn.
suggestions: study interactive media for a few years. if you got no experience, then it will take a while to learn. be prepared to work your ass off.

biofreak: i dont want to learn visual design. want to bring my audio stuff into the field, but would need to tag up with some visual dudes. sorry for the confusion.

ooooooh. ok.
so you know audio already and want to make a website featuring your audio work.
just like a personal portfolio or what were you thinkin? (or am i still way off here?)

you are on the right track. let me expound and let you suggest:
i am interested in finding an in-road to some multimedia projects requiring sound. i'm making the assumption that one of the best ways for me to do that is to have a well done portfolio site to refer people to. is there a better place to start, or a more effective way to use my time and energy at this (starting) point in the game?

mmm... i do a lot of audio work, but i dont market myself as such. so i cant really give you quality advice. but i do think that it wold be the best way to get started.
i think a website will be invaluable to market sound design. it is the best way i can think of to "display" your work. since you cant really carry around a portfolio of audio work.

I'd post a listing on a school job board asking for a student looking for some experience for their portfolio - Here are some vancouver schools that you could post at - since it is a website, location of the designer shouldn't matter

and another tricky part (slow day at the office? why, yes.) is that part of making effective music/audio in this field seems to be matching it with design, interactivity, etc..ie, i'm not interested in being a stock-photographer of audio works....too much of that stuff out their for free... so i will need to work very closely with whoever i find to help with design

find some schools in your area then.
